Joan Winslow is the lead engineer at the Pytheas moonbase during Prey: Mooncrash.

History[]

Background[]

Joan Winslow was assigned to MoonWorks. She participated in the basketball Free Throw Championship organized by Etienne David, coming in second place on the leaderboard with 12 baskets in a row.

Personality and skills[]

Joan never met a machine she couldn't fix or improve, and isn't shy about trying a little "impact calibration" on living things, especially the sort with tentacles.

Character Stats[]

Joan has increased Health (150 HP) and reduced PSI capacity (50), the same starting stats as Vijay Bhatia. Her default starting loadout consists of a stock Wrench and a single Spare Parts.

While Joan has the same starting stats as Vijay, she is focused on the Engineer skill tree rather than Security, and is much less suited to straight-up brawling. Since she is the only character with the Suit Modification ability and also has Materials Expert, she is the best choice for gathering resources in a multi-character run. Since she is the only character with Repair, she is necessarily in order for a character to escape via the Mimic Gate in Pytheas Labs, and can also repair the Grav Shaft which provides a fast route to the Mass Driver controls in MoonWorks. She can also repair broken door slats to allow access to the room behind for any subsequent character. In general, she is an ideal mid-run character, as her Repair skill also allows her to restore the condition rating of weapons, which can then be stashed for a subsequent character to pick up.

While she is not a combat specialist, she is extremely skilled with a Wrench, and can deal handily with lower-ranked Typhon with a few solid whacks. Her Turret Companion starts out virtually useless, but powered up can be an excellent asset. It is however worth noting that the Turret Companion can still be taken over by a Technopath, and is just as deadly when it is turned against her.

Her Typhon-based Neuromod skills are Electrostatic Burst and Machine Mind, making her powerful against Technopaths and even more so against Turrets or Operators. Due to her low Psi, it is necessary to make sparing use of these abilities. Notably, her access to Electrostatic Burst means she does not need to carry EMP Charges or a Disruptor Stun Gun to deal with Typhon Gates.

Joan is unlocked as soon as the player has escaped Pytheas with Andrius Alekna.
